Blancpain’s rise to prominence in the 1990s was nothing short of extraordinary. Under the visionary leadership of Jean-Claude Biver, the brand unveiled the iconic six masterpieces, each a remarkable creation that propelled Blancpain to the forefront of horology. Riding the wave of success from these groundbreaking pieces, Blancpain continued its legacy by producing a select few double complication models, including the 5335, 5585, and 5581—each showcasing a blend of technical sophistication and exquisite design. These models include the Perpetual Minute Repeater, Perpetual Chronograph, and Perpetual Split Chronograph, respectively.
Today, we are proud to offer for sale the Blancpain Ref. 5581, the Split-Seconds Perpetual Calendar. This watch holds the distinction of being the world’s first serially produced split-seconds perpetual calendar and the thinnest too! —a truly revolutionary timepiece. Note the Patek Philippe introduced the 5004 only around 1996. The 5581 was born from the fusion of the manually wound rattrapante caliber 1181 and the perpetual module 55. The caliber 1181 itself is an engineering marvel, being the world’s thinnest split-seconds movement, making the resulting caliber 5581 not only technically advanced but also sleek, reliable, and a true horological masterpiece.
At a modest 34mm in diameter and around 12mm in thickness, the 5581 wears elegantly on the wrist. It remains the rarest of all Blancpain’s double complications, with only a handful of examples ever appearing on the market across all metals.
This particular example comes with its complete set, including the original box, papers, and the coveted gold setting pusher, making it an exceptional addition to any serious collector’s repertoire.
